Exam details & notes
Board of Cosmetology and Barbering (Division of Professional Regulation) requires passing both the NIC written theory and NIC practical examinations for the license type. Vendor changed: exams are now administered by Prometric in partnership with NIC (the old PCS candidate bulletin is outdated). Passing score 75 on each exam per candidate materials; NIC 2022-version theory/practical exams in use since August 1, 2024. Practical exams are held at the Hilton Wilmington Christiana in Newark, DE. Apprenticeship path (1,200 hours under a licensed sponsor) is a notable alternative. Minimum age 16 and 10th-grade education required.
