Exam details & notes
Three components: (1) NIC national written theory exam (board posts the NIC Esthetics Written CIB), (2) a separate Louisiana STATE exam based on the board's law book ('gold book' — cosmetology laws & rules), and (3) a hands-on practical at a board testing facility (supply list includes facial, waxing, and lash lift/tint setups). LSBC schedules and administers testing itself rather than through a national vendor network. Passing per NIC standard (75) reported by secondary sources. Confidence medium: the board site (lsbc.louisiana.gov) is HTTP-only and partially down (testing-dates page erroring), so format details (counts/times) could not be confirmed; a 'TestLA' state testing platform reference could not be resolved. Statute also historically permits oral testing accommodations.
Some details for Louisiana were ambiguous on the official board site when we researched this (July 2026) — double-check the specifics with the board before you rely on them.
Preparing for the Louisiana exam
PrepTempo's Esthetician course covers the NIC national theory core — infection control, skin sciences, skin analysis, and treatments. That's exactly what Louisiana's NIC exam tests. Study your Louisiana law-and-rules section from the board on top of the core.
